In 2016 Australia Post increased in the basic business postage rate substantially.
These changes are part of their reform program to return the letters service to a sustainable footing [i.e. non loss-making] through product, price and operational changes.
Australia Post advised “... (an} increase in the basic postage rate (BPR) to $1 which will apply to the new Regular speed. .... proposed weighted average price increases for business letters fare in the range of 9.5% and 41.8% for products using the Regular timetable.
As a principle, we have maintained the existing business mail pricing discounts to the BPR (noting the BPR represents a 42.9% increase) and extended discounts for some products including Charity Mail, Promo Post and Print Post.
Whilst the increases for some products are significant, we are only seeking to recover our costs. For the 15/16 financial year, with a combination of price increase and cost reductions we will still report a large loss."
These increased Australia Post charges represent a significant business impost. Given the falling demands in hard-copy mail there will be continuing pressure on Australia Post and unavoidable rate increase in due course.
